Yesterday, I got the chance to attend the Warrior Open, which is President Bush's golf tournament for wounded soldiers. I was also able to cover the event for KCBY.
I arrived at the Open alongside professional media outlets, which was a very exciting and good experience for me. I was able to shadow a reporter from FOX4 named Norvis. He was a very interesting man to say the least, but he showed me what he does on a day to day basis, and I was able to follow him around and get all of the same interviews and b-roll that he did. It was a really interesting experience and it really got me thinking about whether or not that is what I want to do in the future.

Friday Night Lights
High school football is back!
On Friday, Coppell had their home opener against McKinney Boyd. Things are looking pretty good this year, and the Cowboys were hoping to really prove that they were serious this year with a big win.
The first home football game also means lots of video board duties for myself. It started with the starting lineup video. I got all of the materials from the coaches on Wednesday and started putting together the graphics, and on Thursday my good friend Will Seitz recorded the voice over for the starting lineups. We finally got that finished on Thursday, and then I also was making a short video (more of an announcement) about a t-shirt fundraiser for our soccer coaches daughter, who is one year old and has cancer (you will hear more about tomorrow), and I was receiving pictures of groups of people in the t-shirts to put into the video. I started putting it together and was waiting and waiting on pictures. finally around 4:00 I finally got the last few pictures and barely finished the video on time. But it turned out great and lots of people bought t-shirts. (watch video here). Then we had the premiere Intro Video. You might have read about it before, but you probably don't understand how excited I was for this. It got a great response and I have received tons of compliments on it. Just watch it
On another note, tomorrow I begin the very long and arduous journey of documentary making. We are going to the hospital to start shooting for our documentary on Kamryn Rakestraw, the one year old daughter of CHS soccer coach Chad Rakestraw, who has been struggling with cancer since May. As of today she is cancer free! I will write more about Kamryn in upcoming posts.

More About Video Board...
So yesterday I told you all about the intro video that I am so very proud of. Well, I still have a lot more to tell you about the video board!
So this Friday is our first home game, and the beginning of my second year as the video board director. Being the director, I have a lot of responsibilities but it is definitely worth it. This week I started to kick things into high gear starting with a meeting with Coach McBride on Tuesday. We went over a lot of aspects of the game that needed some improvement from the technological side. The main thing that we talked about was music throughout the game (i.e. kickoffs and 3rd downs) that will get the team and the crowd pumped up. We got some good ideas down on paper then I headed back to the KCBY room to get all of the music downloaded. I also threw together a little video to play after the games to the song "Should've been a Cowboy" by Toby Keith. One of the other important things I have to do each week is put together the starting lineup video. That consists of using After Effects to make each players slide together, then I have to put all of the together into a video, get the audio clip from the announcer for each player, and also mix in music. After doing that for every game I am at the point where I can complete that pretty fast. Other than that, I also have to put together a highlight video from the previous game, do an interview with Coach McBride every Thursday, give out crew assignments for the upcoming game, and then of course complete any special tasks for that particular week. Although that may seem like a ton of work (well, it actually is) I really enjoy doing it, and hope to get involved with the video board where ever i end up for college
That's all for now, come out to the Coppell football game on Friday and see the final product!

Football Home Opener Fri.
So, as I mentioned in my first post, I am the director for the video board at my high schools football stadium. The video board is basically the best thing ever, I love running the video board. We have lots of thing going on in preparation for the first game this Friday.
First off, me and my friend Will Seitz have been working on the intro video since July, and we just finished it up last week. The video is basically a pump up video that plays on the video board while the team is coming out of the locker room This is probably my favorite video that I have ever made. Back in July we started prepping for the video. We started with the music- we spent over a week looking through epic songs on YouTube. After lots of cuts, we finally decided on a really epic song called Velocitron. We had also been watching alot of videos from other schools (mostly colleges). We saw USC's intro video and we knew that that was what we wanted ours to be like. So we got the music and we got the ideas, then it was time to shoot. We planned the shoot for a Friday morning before two a days started. I had set it up for 9:30 and somehow we didn't end up starting till 11:00 so that was kinda stressing me out. Anyways, once we were finally ready to start shooting, I was really excited. We had about 12 players there to be in the video (They were the teams leadership group). We explained to them what we were going for and showed them the USC video and we started moving. The players had exactly the right idea in their head and the shoot went very smoothly. I was quite pleased. After all of that Will and I sat down to look at the footage and I was slightly disappointed. Everything looked great, except for one thing... the coloring. So we were bouncing around ideas, and Will came up with the Idea to use a "Sin City" effect (this is when the video is all black and white except for one color - in our case red). We tried it out on a few of the clips and I was thrilled with the turnout. So we had that issue solved, but the problem was that it takes a really long time to put this effect on the video, and we had a lot of video. So Will went home and started working on that while I started looking through some highlights from past seasons. A few days later, we met back up and started piecing the video together. The video came together, and we put lots of effects and filters to make it look really cool and we finished... but there was still something missing. And after watching it over and over and over again, we finally realized what it was. We needed some more audio elements. So we went back and added some sound effects, but it still wasn't quite there yet. But then we found the crowning jewel. We found some audio clips from the radio announcers over the past few years and matched them up with a few of the most exciting highlights. After that it was done!
I am really excited to premiere our intro video this Friday at the home opener. It gets my stomach churning every time I watch it, and I can't wait to see how the fans react.
More to come about the video board...

Well I guess I'm starting a blog...
Well hi there-
I'm not really the kind of person that you would probably expect to have a blog, and to be honest, I really never expected that I would have one. I am required to do this for my Dual Credit English class, but I think that I might actually end up enjoying this. That being said, I have no idea what I am going to be writing about. For all I know I might end up writing about something completely ridiculous.
Anyways, I guess I should tell you a little about my self. First off, I have a love/hate relationship with writing. On one hand, I absolutely love writing news stories, particularly sports stories. I also quite enjoy script writing (although I have not had to much practice). But on the other hand, I absolutely despise writing essays, and I always try my hardest to stay away from them. I'm not quite sure which category blogging is going to fall into, but I guess by the end of the semester we will find out. Secondly, I am a passionate video journalist, and hope to one day work for ESPN. I am the Program Director for my school TV station (KCBY), and I also direct the video board at our football stadium. I am employed at Las Colinas Country Club and so far i am enjoying it, but we will just have to wait and see how it goes. I love playing golf, water sports, competing, and I love my friends. I am currently a Senior at Coppell HS, and hope to be attending Baylor University next fall. (sic 'em!)
Over the next few months you will probably read a lot about KCBY, the Country Club, sports, and lots of randomness, but I guess that's kind of the point!
